tree-trimming-pollarding
Pollarding is a form of tree trimming that’s been around since medieval times.
Good communication with the team on the ground is very important.
Careful roping, planning and communication with the team is essential when taking a tree down.
Pruning the very tips of each branch of this 150 year old Oak tree and thinning it out overall allowed far more light into the garden during the following summer.
Felling trees in tight spots is an art. There was little margin for error between a neighbouring tree and a shed…
90 foot Poplar Lombardy – very upright growth habit (fastigiate). Very slow and careful dismantling of a very tall tree!
This is an example of a Magnolia before and after a summer prune. Late summer early September is best after its second flourish of flowers.
This Pittosporum was given a crown lift (from the bottom up) and shaped to give better light to the garden, and a safer place for the children’s play area.
The processing and stacking of wood is part of clearing and tidying up. This pile would see you through the winter and beyond.
This Acer davidii benefitted greatly from having been ‘cleaned out’ – there were a number of dead, dying or diseased branches that needed disposal and careful pruning.
Getting ropes and lanyards carefully organised to ensure safety at heights is paramount for successfully dismantling a tree.
After felling a large diseased tree (in this case, a Horse Chestnut with bleeding canker), a close inspection of the diseased branches/trunk is carried out. Diseased branches are then either burnt or buried to stop the spread of further infection to other trees.
This is a large Oak with storm damage. If there is a weakness through disease or fungi, then branches are damaged more easily by wind, snow or adverse weather.
Ring barking is something that kills trees over a long period – it is not something I would recommend. We would rather fell a tree than ring bark it.
Formal shaping of a Bay tree to compliment/reflect the newly landscaped minimalist style garden.

Hi Jules

Your expert pruning of the historic tree has ensured we may have a good crop this year – if the blossom is any thing to go by. The ITV drama Belgravia ( Aired on a Sunday evening at 9 o’clock) has referenced Isleworth as a market garden area during the last century so quite poignant.
